I don’t really promote it here because, well, the average person who’s interested in reading my gibberish here isn’t all that interested in reading my Ruby on Rails stuff.

The new job has been working out great, but I’ll be taking a much-needed vacation right after school lets out with K and M to visit Grandma. Should be fun, as I’ve not yet met my mother-in-law, and she seems very nice.

I stubbed my pinky toe a couple of days ago, badly. Looked horrible. A few people thought it was broken, but when I finally had x-rays done (to satisfy my morbid curiosity, because there’s really not much they can do for a broken pinky toe anyway) they told me it doesn’t appear to be fractured — if it is, it is a tiny one. It doesn’t feel tiny. It’s amazing how much trouble a tiny little toe can cause. I’ve been told I have an unusual tolerance for pain, and this thing is really messing me up.

I’m a bit more frustrated than I would normally be by something like this, because I’m getting married a week from Friday, and then moving on the 22nd. I don’t have time for something like this to slow me down, yet here I am, hobbling along, and looking pathetic while doing it.

I don’t do pathetic well. When I feel like I’m operating at less than 100%, I get pretty annoyed with things. Pretty annoyed with my body, mostly, for failing me. It seems like I can’t remember the last time I was running at 100%. Is this what getting older feels like? This sucks.

Anyway, it occurs to me that maybe I’m being forced to slow down a little because I wouldn’t do it by myself. If so, I’d have much preferred a more subtle message. :)

Still looking forward to my marriage. I just hope I heal quickly, and don’t end up hobbling down the aisle.

Today marks my 5 month “anniversary” (the stickler in me hates using that word given its etymology) with K. She is awesome for me in all the ways I could have asked for, and so many ways I would have never dreamed.

I am so thankful that God sent her into my life. So much about our past experiences has prepared us to truly appreciate one another. I would never have imagined her being right for me, on paper — but in practice, we “just work,” and it’s wonderful.

So, I’m fasting today. I’ve been struggling with a lot of anxiety this week, and I really felt led to spend more time with God and to fast as well, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m not sure just how long I can hold out, but I know that after day 3 I will at the least start adding juices or something — they say doing more than 3 days on a water fast is dangerous without doctor supervision.

Update: Made it three days, broke fast after church Saturday night — well, not counting a tiny communion wafer and cup of grape juice at church. It was a really great experience, and I ended up not even really struggling with being hungry.

So, I’ve been a little quiet here because I’ve been busy prepping to move back across the river to Louisville proper. I moved last Friday (yes, Friday the 13th, I spit in the face of your superstition!) and I’m finally more or less settled in. I really like this apartment I moved to. We close on the house on the 24th, but I had to be out before the closing, because the buyer takes possession at closing.

Also… I met someone. She isn’t the person I would have imagined myself with if you’d asked me a month ago (I’m not saying this behind her back — we’ve had this discussion), but we’ve been dating for a little while now, and she’s pretty great.

Anyway, we’ll see where it leads…

“I’m going to hell, but I’m okay with it. There’s a special place reserved just for me.”

These were the words of a cashier at the grocery store I went to last night after church, spoken to the bagger just as I walked up to the register. Initially, I wrote them off as a joke, as nobody who believes there’s a hell to go to would really be okay with going there… would they? I got my grocery bags, loaded them in the car, and sat there with my keys in the ignition.

But I couldn’t bring myself to drive away. Kyle Idleman had just delivered a sermon entitled “Making a Difference: Conviction to Speak Up,” and the conversation now occurring went something like this:

What do you think you’re doing?
I’m driving home to put away my groceries.
After what you just heard that girl say?
She was probably just joking.
Were you even paying attention in church tonight?
Don’t make me go back in there. She’ll think I’m insane.
If she was serious when she made that comment, don’t you think she stands to lose a lot more than you do?
Maybe I could pretend I forgot to buy something?
Just get back in there before she’s gone and your chance to make a difference is past.

I walked around the store clumsily looking for some small item to pretend I forgot. When I finally rounded to the checkout counter, she wasn’t there.

I hurriedly scanned the area, and caught her by the customer service counter, getting ready to leave and chatting with a friend. As I walked up to her, her gaze turned to me. Yeah, she definitely thought I was crazy already. Great.

“I’m sorry, but I just had to come back and ask you: You don’t really think you’re going to hell, do you?”
“Probably. But it’s okay.”
“You think I’m crazy — you just don’t believe it actually exists, right? Don’t be nice to me just because I’m a customer. You can tell me you think I’m nuts.”
“No, I think it exists. But it’s okay. I’m okay with it.”
“I think that’s really sad. Why are you okay with it?”
“Well, I deserve it. I’ve done bad things. I’m always getting angry.”
“So?! You think God wants you to go to hell for getting angry? You’ve heard about the whole Christ thing, right?” (Yes, my attempt to explain the saving grace of Christ to this girl was this clumsy and inarticulate.)
“Yeah, I know… but, it’s okay.”
“Well, look, I can tell I’m weirding you out right now, but I just wanted you to know that God loves you.”
“I know… it’s okay.”

I knew at that point that I had worn out my welcome, so I walked to my car, bewildered by our exchange. I’d expected her to say almost anything except “Yes, I believe in hell, and I think I’m going there.” How sad. How helpless she must have felt, to be acutely aware of her own failings. To know that she isn’t deserving of a place in His kingdom, but be unable or unwilling to accept the grace that God offers through Christ.

Hopefully the next time I go, I’ll have the chance to pick up where we left off, and tell her:

“I don’t even know your name, and I think you’re worth saving from hell. How much more do you think the God who created you and loved you enough to send His Son to pay the price for your sins wants to save you?” (by the way, if you don’t know Christ, that same message goes for you, too.)

In the meantime, I prayed for her when I got back to my car, and prayed that God would use my words, however clumsy and unpracticed, to remind her that He loves her.

So, that’s my story on speaking up. What’s yours?

I grew up in a Christian family, and as long ago as I can remember, I was attending a small Baptist church with them. I accepted Christ and was baptized when I was still in grade school. While that’s certainly something to be thankful for, at times I think that those of us who grow up in the church don’t really appreciate what we’ve got, and I think it can easily make us lukewarm in our faith.

When I was growing up, I often felt as though I didn’t really have a testimony or calling. I mean, I was assured that I had my salvation, but I don’t think I really leaned on God like I should have. It took me over 30 years of living, and the most difficult experience I ever faced before I finally “got it.” I sought God more earnestly than I ever had before, and I started to see Him do amazing things.

Anyway, there are quite a few essays worth of writing to do about that, and that’s not what I’m writing this for. I just wanted to point out that I have a testimony now, and more importantly, a calling.

Starting next Friday, I’m answering that call. I interviewed at the church to volunteer in our Care Ministry, and I start training next Friday to become a peer counselor. They’ll be training me to help people deal with difficult situations, and seek God’s healing and purpose for their lives, even through the pain. I believe that God has used this past year to uniquely equip me for this task, and I look forward to what He’ll do next.

Keep me in your prayers. :)
