Crackdown

My recent gaming addiction has been Crackdown. It’s another one of those “open world” games, in the style of Grand Theft Auto (not surprising, since the creator of that game was behind this one). A lot of reviewers have been giving the game some grief for not containing enough of a storyline, but I really, really like how open-ended the game can be. The process of “leveling up” your agent is addictive, as is the crazy stuff you can pull off once you’ve gotten a few stars.

Where the game really shines is in the co-op play, though. Finally convinced a friend of mine to pick it up, and the amount of carnage we produced was considerable. The game’s open-ended nature really shines, here. I was able to help him obtain orbs (glowing orbs are scattered around the city that increase either agility or all agent statistics, depending on the type) that would have been inaccessible to him at his agent’s level of progression by having him hop into a car and throwing that car onto a ledge, or in one case, simply kicking him from the top of one building to another! Very fun stuff. As odd as the comparison sounds, it sort of reminds me of a modern version of ToeJam and Earl, where you never quite knew what to expect.
