Another year older.

So, my birthday’s this weekend. Birthdays are kind of weird once you "grow up." Sometimes people still throw the parties for you, with the cake and the ice cream and occasionally, the gifts. But for some reason, even though it’s not like I’m getting "old" yet, a birthday doesn’t really feel special. In fact, you forget it’s coming until it’s almost upon you.

Maybe it’s because time seems to speed up with every year older you grow. I’ve always wondered about that. I assume that it’s because you have more history to draw on, and once you have a point of reference to draw from, time doesn’t seem to last so long. I remember when I was a kid, a week seemed like an eternity to wait for something. Now, things that are a month away seem like they’re right on top of me. If this is what perspective brings us, I’d prefer to have less of it, please.

Time largely is a perception and to learn to live in the time that we are given, that’s the secret if there is one… That’s one way to look at it, another way is: “It’s a good day to die!!!” :)

time is the most powerful thing in the world.
if you know where you’ll end up when its over,
sit back and enjoy the ride.

I created a time perception calculator. It’s based on percentages of time you’ve been alive versus another person. i’ve used this with my children in rewards and punishments. i.e. grounding, doing chores for a peroid of time before rewarded for effort… stuff like that. it’s interesting to see how time is percieved by people. i am only 5 years older then ernie, and i know exactly how he feels about the birthday thing. an old wise man once told me, time goes faster as you get older for the simple reason that a period of time becomes less and less of a persons life as they get older. 2 years to a 4 year old is 50% of their life… 2 years to a 60 year old is only 3 percent of their life.
